Flying Dutchman etching

September - Steve Fearn

In monochrome, the etched lettering says 'The Flying Dutchman Inn' on one line, with 'Cirencester' on a second line. The scroll the text is around could be what led the author to think it was a ship.
We (Cirencester Civic Society) are revising the Pub Walk. Not a pub crawl, but a tour of town passing the sites and telling the stories of pubs that we've lost. One such pub is the Flying Dutchman. Finding the origin of the name is a quest I've embarked upon. One story says it's after the ghost ship of the name and that there is still an etching of the ship on one of the internal windows. Sadly, that's not true and I'm no closer to the truth... Race horse, steam train or ghost ship.
