At the end of the month, I was in Newcastle working at the Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government (MHCLG) office. Just around the corner sits St James’ Park, the home of Newcastle United since 1892.
I'm not a huge football fan, but with both my boys living and breathing the game, it’s difficult not to keep up with what’s happening.
I happened to be there just days after the passing of Kevin Keegan. Outside St James’ Park, thousands of flowers, shirts, scarves, and handwritten messages had been left by fans and members of the public, a heartfelt tribute to a man who clearly meant so much to both the club and the city.
Having played for Newcastle United between 1982 and 1984, before returning as manager from 1992 to 1997, “King Kev” became far more than a footballer. Seeing the outpouring of love and gratitude from people of all ages was a powerful reminder that sport can leave a lasting mark far beyond the pitch. ⚫⚪
