Talley Abbey

September - Sue

The very tall ruin of the remnant of Talley Abbey three stories high, which was built by the White Canon monks also called Premonstratensians. Three arches remain. Quite impressive sitting overlooking beautiful countryside and a lake.
What’s left of a 12th century Abbey in Talley. The monks who started building it were White Canons also called Premonstratensians. There was a battle between them and the Abbot Peter of Whitland Abbey who out of jealousy, tried to seize their land and get the White Canons to join the Cistercians, which halted the build for 9 years. By then after an arduous battle the White Canons were bankrupt and the Abbey was never fully completed, having a shortened nave and missing a north aisle. From the time of Edward 1 the Abbey became a parish church.
